Grow Your Online Presence [2023] | 7 Key Steps | Plus Free Tools

How To Grow Your Online Presence [2023] (+ Free Tools)

It’s a challenge for every business out there, we all want to be seen more. Luckily, there are a number of things you can do to help grow your online presence.

We all have an end goal, whether it be to get sales, collect customer data, promote your sale.

To achieve your goal, you need to make sure that you have ticked all the boxes but as we all know, that’s easier said than done.

Before getting started take a look at the image below.

Adults in the UK are spending on average 4 hours per day online.

That’s a lot of time but you have to remember it’s not just you wanting their attention.

Your competitors are out there as well. They want a piece of cake. They want your cake.

So it’s important you are always looking to grow your online presence.

Today we’ll be looking at how we can do this. I’ll also be showing you some free tools you can use.

How To Increase Your Online Presence

1. A Modern Attractive Website

Expectations are high these days.

We expect websites to load straight away.

We expect to find what we’re looking for in a couple of clicks.

You need to ask yourself; ‘does my website do this’?

How your website looks is also important. Looking at the below, I know which one I’d rather buy from.

There are many template website builders out there you can choose from.

In my opinion, they often include glitches and bugs that prevent them from serving you as they should.

I always advise investing in a professional website developer.

It might be more expensive but having a well-constructed website that delivers sales and leads is worth it.

2. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)

Have you searched your business only to find you appear on the second page of Google?

It’s likely you haven’t optimised your website. And that’s losing you customers and leads.

SEO is so important in 2021. Every business with an online presence should be trying to increase its Search Engine Results Pages (SERP).

Commitment is required for SEO. Many businesses will optimise their website at launch and think the job is done.

That couldn’t be any further than the truth. It’s continuous.

Google has just launched Core Web Vitals. If your website doesn’t meet the requirements you will be affected.

Find out how your website performs for Core Web Vitals here and get actions you can take to improve performance.

When done right there are so many benefits to SEO. Here’s some SEO advice to grow your online presence;

  • Follow the tried and tested methods of keyword-targeted content, link building, and optimising images
  • Improve your Core Web Vitals
  • Fix any broken links on your website
  • Use Schema markup to give Google and other Search Engines the information they want

3. Think carefully about the platforms you need

I remember at my school one of my teachers used to preach this phrase; ‘quality over quantity.

When applied to Social Media, it’s perfect.

Think carefully about the platforms you need.

Answer this question; Where are my target market?

Plus, having one or two accounts with high engagement is better than having loads with next to no engagement.

Here are some platforms you should consider;

  • Facebook
  • Instagram
  • Twitter
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • TikTok
  • Snapchat
  • Pinterest

4. Social Media SEO

Above we talked about SEO. One thing we didn’t touch on was SEO on Social Media.

How we find our news and information is changing.

More and more people head straight to Social Media.

Social Media SEO has increased in importance since Instagram announced it now supports keyword searches.

Previously searching was by accounts, hashtags, and people.

This is a big development and one you should look to take advantage of.

Include search terms and keywords in your content. Hashtags are also very important.

It depends on your type of business but you could receive a boost in how far your content reaches.

Look at the number of views these three videos have.

I searched ‘how to grow watermelon’.

Think about your own business and how you can tap into Social Media SEO.

5. Online Listings

Online listings or business directories are a great way to grow your online presence.

One of the main benefits is that a lot of the big hitters are free.

You get to list your business, contact details, and a brief description of your products and services.

They can also help with SEO as you might receive a link pointing towards your website. This helps with SEO as we touched on above.

I strongly advise making use of Online Listings.

They take minimal time to set up and provide another means of customers finding you.

Here are some online listings businesses in Northern Ireland can use;

  • Google My Business
  • Bing
  • Local Chamber of Commerce
  • UK Small Business
  • NI Fed

Below is how your business can appear on Google by using Google My Business.

6. Employee Advocacy

Encourage your employees to share your content with their network.

Research by Social Media has found that content shared by employees receives 8X more engagement than content shared by brand channels.

It’s time you took advantage of this.

Share your content with your staff and ask them to share it.

Your staff can also benefit from this. They might pick up some useful information from the content that could help them.

LinkedIn now provides the option to recommend content to your employees.

As long as your employee has the company page in their job title, they will receive your update.

Free Tools To Grow Your Online Presence

Who doesn’t love a freebie? Even better when it can help you get more sales or leads.

Below I will provide you with four free tools that you can use to grow your online presence.

Some might have Paid or Pro versions, but the free versions can be just as useful.

Let’s get started!

1. Yoast SEO Plugin

As we touched on above, SEO is so important when trying to grow your online presence.

The Yoast SEO Plugin is in my opinion the best on the market.

Using Yoast SEO you can;

  • Optimise your site using keywords
  • Avoid dead links on your site
  • Create Meta Titles and Descriptions
  • Generate SiteMaps to submit to Google Search Console

There is a free and paid version, however, everything you need to start is available on the free version.

Get started by installing the Yoast SEO plugin on your website.

2. Canva

Canva is a graphic design platform used by everyone from professional graphic designers to small business owners.

I use it myself for any graphics and content that I need to create.

There are tons of different templates that you can choose from and customise to suit your brand.

On Canva you can create social media graphics, brochures, menus, presentations, and posters. And a whole lot more.

Like Yoast SEO, there is also a Pro Version. I myself have upgraded to it as it’s great.

The Pro version has many added benefits, such as removing backgrounds from images.

The cost of the Pro version is only £10.99 and it is truly worth it.

3. Google Keyword Planner

You probably have been thinking where do I find keywords to optimise my website for SEO?

Well, this is where I introduce the Google Keyword Planner.

It finds keywords in two ways;

  1. It scans your website and finds keywords and phrases
  2. You enter a word or term associated with your business and it finds relevant keywords

As you see above it tells you the average monthly searches for each keyword.

You also find out how competitive it is.

If you are using keywords for Google Ads, it’s best to find keywords with high monthly searches but medium or low competition.

This means the average Cost Per Click (CPC) will be lower.

4. Facebook Creator Studio

There are loads of tools out there that you can use to schedule your social media posts.

I use both the Facebook Creator Studio and Business Manager when managing social media accounts.

There’s one reason I am recommending the Creator Studio over the Business Manager.

And that reason is for video content.

Using the Creator Studio you can add tags to your videos.

These are terms that will help your content be found easier.

Facebook Creator Studio

Making use of these tags and keywords will help grow your online presence.

You can also change the thumbnail to make it more attractive to users.

For scheduling stories the Business Manager is fantastic but when it comes to videos use the Creator Studio.

Grow Your Online Presence

Growing your online presence can be difficult, especially if you are a small business juggling multiple roles.

By using the methods above you will be able to reach more prospects and convert more sales and leads.

The free tools will hopefully come in useful and if anything, will save you time.
